Paul J. "P.J." Smith, Jr., 72, of Pensacola passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2014. P.J. was a lifelong resident of Pensacola, FL. He graduated from Pensacola High School class of 1960. Upon graduation he received a baseball scholarship to Pensacola Junior College, within a year he was signed to the Washington Senators. In 1963 he joined the Marine Corp Reserves and served for 10 years. His love of sports led him to referee and umpire from the late sixties to 1988 when forced to retire for health reasons. P.J. joined the Pensacola Fire Department in 1964 and achieved the rank of Captain before his retirement. P.J. had a passion for the game of baseball like no other. His commitment and love for the sport was un-paralled. This dedication followed him as an athlete and coach. In 1992 he found his second home and family at Pensacola Catholic High School as a volunteer/assistant coach. He coached at CHS for 22 years touching the lives of hundreds of players and fellow coaches. During his time at CHS they won 3 state titles, 3 state runner-ups, 16 district championships, 12 final fours and 1 national title. P.J. was a member of the Krewe of Lafitte, Florida HS Coaches Association, Loyal Order of the Moose and avid fan of the Florida Gators. P.J. is survived by his high school sweetheart, wife Sheila; son, Paul J. Smith III (Cindi); daughter, Lorie Howerton (Lance); three grandchildren, Blake Howerton, Paul J. Smith IV, and Summer Smith. He is preceded in death by his father, Paul J. Smith, Sr.; mother Lillian O'Connell Smith and sister, Cora Smith. Visitation will be held 1-3pm Sunday, October 19, 2014 Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be held 2:00pm Monday, October 20, 2014 at St. Paul Catholic Church with Fr. Joe Fowler, celebrant. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Sonny Reedy, Keith Haynes, Jim Edler, Drew LaBounty, Nick Mead and Trae Cary. Honorary Pallbearers include all former Baseball & Football players of Coach Smith. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Pensacola Catholic HS or Pensacola Catholic HS baseball in memory of Coach Smith.
