Obituary

Peter Wayne Mitchell, 78, of Pensacola, FL passed away Monday, October 3, 2022.

Peter Wayne was born July 16, 1944, in Montgomery, AL. He grew up in Luverne, AL where he went to Luverne High School and the University of Alabama. He was a huge Roll Tide fan and had lots of "Roll Tide" gear that was a must for game day. He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, where he had many good friends. He felt strongly that everyone deserves a fair trial regardless of whether they had money or not. He got his first job with the Los Angeles Public Defenders Office at the time the "Manson family" was being tried.

In Los Angeles he and Kay, his wife, had season tickets to plays and sports events like the Lakers.

Moving home, friends and the South, he and Kay moved to Pensacola, FL with their new baby, Erin, and two Scotties. He found a job with the Pensacola Public Defenders Office where he helped the indigent. He moved onto many years of private practice. He was a member of the Pensacola Yacht Club where he and his family had a series of wonderful boats and enjoyed fishing and sailing. With his daughter, Erin and wife, Kay, they sailed in the Regatta Al Sol race to Mexico.

He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, where he was a lay reader and chalice bearer and served on the vestry.

Maybe his heart was mostly with his farm, Crossroads Farm, and his much-loved Angus cows, where his ashes will be buried. He and his sons, Justin and David had many good times hunting at the farm. One other special place was his home in Costa Rica and the mountain top rancho. Many happy vacations and adventures were part of their life for many years.

Peter Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, Pearl and Furman Mitchell, as well as his brother, Wendell Mitchell.

Survivors include his wife, Karon "Kay" Kennedy Mitchell; daughter, Erin Mitchell Hunter (Cameron Charles); sons, Peter Justin Mitchell and David Kennedy Mitchell (Penelope Bishop); grandchildren, Cameron Bonnie Hunter, Jude Alexander Hunter, Charles River Hunter, Charlotte Helene Hunter, Althea Sybella Mitchell, Porter Mallie Mitchell, and Peter Justin Mitchell, Jr.; sister, Annette Mitchell Sikes; as well as many other Mitchell extended family.

Memorial Service will be held 1:00pm Friday, October 14, 2022, at Christ Episcopal Church.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Alex Brown and to their many good friends.
