Phyllis E. Nearn, 93, of Germantown, TN, formerly Pensacola, FL, passed away Friday, January 19, 2024.
Phyllis was born on November 23, 1930, in Greeley, CO. She graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Memphis, TN, class of 1948, and graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing, class of 1950. Most of her nursing career was spent at St. Joseph Hospital in Memphis where she worked in the cardiac unit. She also worked as a home healthcare nurse part time while fulfilling her duties as a wife and mother.
She married Charles E. "Charlie" Nearn on November 11, 1955, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Memphis and they were married for 67 years. She and Charlie had four children, which they raised in Memphis and upon Charlie's retirement from the Tennessee State Court of Appeals, they moved to Pensacola, FL where they lived for 30 years.
Phyllis was a talented artist who enjoyed painting, crocheting, and weaving. She enjoyed sewing and she did beautiful needlepoint and other hand needle work. She loved to play tennis and was an avid reader. She and Charlie were members of the Pensacola Yacht Club where they socialized and had many friends. Phyllis was a member of the Hospitality Committee for the Yacht Club.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her parents, Wayne Lemuel Elgin and Angeline Josiwck Elgin; brother, Wayne Charles Elgin; sister-in-law, Doris Elgin; as well as son, Charles E. Nearn, Jr.
She is survived by three of her children, Angeline Garbuzinski (Johnny), Christopher Nearn (Christi), and Michael Nearn (Debbie); as well as seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; as well as one niece.
A rosary will be prayed at 10:00am with a Memorial Mass to begin at 10:30am Friday, February 2, 2024, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 8151 Poplar Ave., Germantown, TN 38138.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ave Maria Home, 2795 Charles Bryan Rd., Bartlett, TN 38134.
