Obituary

Dr. Randall "Randy" P. Rigsby passed away on June 5, 2023, at the age of 69 of complications from a lung disease. He was loving husband to Gloria for 46 years.

Born in Mobile, AL on October 8, 1953, he was the only child of Paul and Billie Joyce Rigsby. He grew up playing baseball and visiting his grandparents in Natchez, MS during summer breaks. Randy loved to tell stories of how he was a different character each summer to keep himself entertained. He pretended to be anyone from a preacher to Tarzan!

His family later moved to Pensacola, FL where he graduated from Escambia High School in 1971. After graduating from Escambia, Randy attended Pensacola Junior College where he played timpani in the Civic Band and the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra. While attending PJC, he would often return to Escambia to visit with his band friends. He went to a football game one day and saw Gloria from across the field and told his friend that he wanted to meet her and that he would marry her one day! He then went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in biology at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL in 1975. He and his family loved the Crimson Tide, and he enjoyed his time there as a TKE.

Upon graduation, Randy decided to pursue his degree in pharmacy at the McWhorter School of Pharmacy at Samford University in Birmingham, AL. While attending post-graduate school, he and Gloria married on June 26, 1976, at Myrtle Grove United Methodist Church. They enjoyed newlywed life in Birmingham while Randy earned his degree in 1978.

Randy always wanted to be in the medical field and decided to pursue a career in dentistry after observing his mentor and Gloria's boss, Dr. Maxwell de la Rua. He and Gloria moved to Gainesville, FL where he earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree from The University of Florida. A month before graduation, Randy and Gloria welcomed their only daughter Mandy in 1982. Shortly after graduation, they moved to Chattahoochee for a short time, and then ultimately made their way back home to Pensacola where Dr. Rigsby began his first dental practice.

After practicing dentistry for five years, Dr. Rigsby became more and more interested in orthodontics. He earned his orthodontic degree from Emory University in Atlanta, GA in 1990. Randy, Gloria, and Mandy moved back home to Pensacola where he opened his orthodontic practice that spanned 33 years.

As a board-certified orthodontist Dr. Rigsby loved practicing orthodontics and orofacial pain management and took meticulous care of each patient. He treated every case as if he was treating a member of his own family. He often used the term "keep smiling" when he would see his patients in the office or out and about.

Dr. Rigsby felt extremely blessed to be in a profession that he loved and tried to give back to dentistry and orthodontics by serving in leadership roles locally and nationally. He received many professional awards and accolades from his colleagues in dentistry including the Escambia-Santa Rosa Dental Association Dentist of the Year and the Florida Association of Orthodontists Distinguished Service Award.

Randy's most beloved title was being called "Papa" by his two granddaughters, Lainey and Laurel. He loved playing with them in the pool, teaching them how to play the drums, and experiencing Disney World with them. They brought so much joy to his life.

The golf course was a place of enjoyment for Randy. He picked up his first golf club when he was a young boy and enjoyed the sport for most of his life. He even affectionately earned the nickname "Two Dot" by his golfing buddies because he always marked his golf balls with two dots so he could easily identify them. His favorite part of golf was the fellowship and relationships he made with special friends on the golf course.

Above all, Randy loved The Lord and found much fulfillment in attending church and serving as a deacon at First Baptist Church of Pensacola. His faith guided him through every step of his life. His favorite verse was Romans 8:28 "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

Randy is survived by his loving wife, Gloria; daughter, Mandy Conner (James); granddaughters, Lainey and Laurel.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to their many close friends who have been like family, including his office manager of 28 years, Rachel Medici. Special thanks to the staff at Rigsby Orthodontics for the care and extraordinary service they gave to the family and patients.

"…a friend sticks closer than a brother." -Proverbs 18:24
