Obituary

Raymond "Patrick" Gilligan, Jr., 60, passed away April 28, 2011 after a brave battle with cancer. Born in Hartford, CT, he lived his teenage years in San Diego, CA before being drafted into the military. Pat served his country in the U.S. Navy for 21 years, retiring as a Senior Chief Petty Officer in 1991. After his and his wife's Naval careers, they have made Pensacola their home since 1994. Those who knew him will forever recall his sense of wittiness, candor, compassion and above all - his sincere loyalty and devotion to family and friends. He was a proud Irishman and all knew how he loved his Irish heritage. Patrick was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Patrick Sr., and his sister, Gerrie. Patrick is survived by his best friend and wife, Margie Gilligan, "his boys" Matthew Gilligan and Jimmie Carter of Virginia Beach, VA, brother Mickey Gilligan (Bev) of San Diego, CA, sister Edna Johnson (Rich) of Escanaba, MI, numerous nieces and nephews that love him beyond words. Last, but certainly not least is his mother, Shirley Radcliff (Ray) whom he loved and cherished more than life itself. Patrick was a superior mechanic and could fix anything with wheels. The "heart" of the neighborhood, all the kids knew where to get a popsicle or just hang out with Pat in his garage, play a game of "stickball" and/or acquire some advice on being young. He never forgot that children should be allowed to be little and they require patience and nurturing. And he always had treats for any neighborhood dog out on a walk. He loved the game of golf. A passionate golfer who enjoyed playing courses all around the world, but most of all playing a round with old friends and his son and nephews. The family will receive friends from 10:30am until services at 11:30am Friday, May 6, 2011 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, with a procession to Barrancas National Cemetery for a ceremony with full military honors. Active Pallbearers will be Matthew Gilligan, Jimmie Carter, Mickey Gilligan, Joey York, Bob York, and Ray York. Honorary Pallbearers are Mike Hawley, Kevin "Moose" Missel, Phil Gist and "Little" Michael Hawley. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice, 5041 N. 12th Ave, Pensacola, FL 32504 or to Sacred-Heart Cancer Center, 1545 Airport Blvd, Pensacola, FL 32504. Or, as much as Pat loved children, contributions may be made to any organization to the benefit of children in his name. Very special thanks to all of our cherished friends during Pat's fight and all the support we were given in this tough time. You are too numerous to mention, but you all know who you are. To Dr Eldawy and "Nurse Lucy" of Sacred-Heart Cancer Center for their genuine compassion and care of our entire family. And a very special thanks to Rachel of Covenant Hospice for her insight and loving guidance to all of us on his final journey-a true angel. HARPER-MORRIS MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.
