Obituary

Robert L. "Bob" Turner, Sr. of Pensacola, FL died on Thursday, March 5, 2015. He was born May 25, 1928 in St. Petersburg, FL to Byron L. and Helen Dover Turner. Bob lived in Georgia during his early years and returned to Bradenton, FL to attend Manatee High School. He was an Eagle Scout. Bob pledged Alpha Tau Omega fraternity at the University of Florida where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree. Bob served his country in the Guard, and later as an Air Force officer in the Korean Conflict. He was a reservist in both the Air Force and the Army for a combined total of 35 years where he achieved the rank of Colonel. Bob met Clara Mae Niemeier while singing in the Methodist church choir in Merced, CA. They married and returned to the University of Florida where Bob pursued graduate studies. It was in Gainesville, FL where their son, Lee was born. Bob accepted a position with the U. of F. Citrus Experiment Station in Lake Alfred, FL. The family resided there until 1965. Bob was among the first administrative staff hired to develop and open the University of West Florida. He took great pride in each new building and especially loved the campus' wooded site. Bob served as Director of Auxiliary Services until his promotion to Planning Director. He served in that capacity until his retirement in May, 1992. Many wonderful family friends and fond memories came from his UWF years. Living in Florida provided many pleasures, including fishing area waters, canoeing local rivers, gardening and tending his coveted orange tree. Bob was an avid runner and completed several marathons and other distance races. The Double Bridge Run was one of his favorites. Bob delighted in running with a group of friends with whom he formed a very special bond. His running group gathered faithfully each Friday. They celebrated Bob's birthdays with a greeting card contest and by donating to his favorite charity, Milk and Honey Outreach Ministries. RV camping at N.A.S. Pensacola with his dear wife, Clara Mae and beloved dog, Missy provided much pleasure in his later years. He was a multi-gallon blood donor who believed in helping others. Bob served God by serving others. He traveled to Russia, Jamaica and Costa Rica on work mission trips. He served on many committees, helped renovate the Wright Place and participated in Bible and religious studies. His recent studies were with a very special group of women who discovered the compassionate, loving nature of Jesus through sacred scripture and other readings. Bob's and Clara Mae's trips to Russia served as an inspiration for the 1998 adoption, by his son and daughter-in-law, of his grandson, Jacob Lee Turner. Pop, as many other children also called him, was a wonderful companion for Jacob. Their special activities together included gardening, fishing and watching planes take off and land at the airport. Bob is survived by his wife of sixty years, Clara Mae Niemeier Turner of Pensacola; son, Robert Lee Turner, Jr. (Kathleen); grandson, Jacob and granddaughter, Amber Foxworth of Lubbock, TX; granddaughter, Summer Maeda (Gregg) and great-grandchildren, Taylor and Cole Maeda of San Diego, CA; sister, Mary Margaret Turner Dancy (Bob) and niece Jean Dancy Jones (Jason) and grand-nephew, Oliver all of Atlanta, GA. Bob was touched in recent years by cousin, Eden Matthews. He held close all of the Turner/Dover/Carter families ranging from the mountains of Georgia to the Florida West Coast. He also loved the Niemeier/Olson relatives of his wife, Clara Mae and deeply respected life which was tied to the land. Visitation will be held from 10am Thursday, March 19, 2015, with Memorial services following at 10:30am at First United Methodist Church, Pensacola. A gathering will follow in the Wright Place. Memorials can be made to Milk and Honey Outreach Ministries, P.O. Box 1443, Pensacola, FL 32591-1443 or the FUMC Pensacola Living Trust Fund.
