Robert "Bob" Granville Shiell, 90, of Pensacola, FL passed away peacefully at home on September 30, 2017, following a long battle with COPD. He was born in Miami, FL, on September 23, 1927, and grew up in Hollywood, FL.
Bob served in the US Navy from October 1944 to December 1945 and again from October 1950 to December 1951 in the field of radio intelligence in Washington, DC, and Yokosuka, Japan. In Washington, he was a member of the communications staff of the Chief of Naval Operations. In 1948, he graduated with honors with a degree in Accounting, Tax and Auditing from Benjamin Franklin University in Washington, DC. He was employed as a Special Agent, Intelligence Division, US Internal Revenue Service in Florida from October 1949 to October 1950 and December 1951 to May 1958. He was employed as a CPA for one year in Pensacola before establishing his own practice.
Bob's successful CPA practice in downtown Pensacola operated for more than 40 years. He is a founder and former board member of First American Bank, former member of the Krewe of Lafitte, Downtown Toastmasters and other civic organizations. He is a former member of Pensacola Racquet Club and Pensacola Athletic Club. He retired early and enjoyed tennis, reading and travelling, including spending several weeks in Cashiers, NC, each summer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Julia Montague Shiell and Bernard William Shiell and his brothers, David, Daniel and Bernard.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel; daughter, Linda (Dave) Dunwoody, Pensacola, and son, Robert Joseph Shiell, Pensacola; stepchildren, John Holloway, Ocala, FL, and Marjorie Holloway, Sarasota, FL; several step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren; sister-in-law Sara Shiell, Pensacola; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial Service and gathering of friends will be held 2:00pm Saturday, November 4, 2017 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, Pensacola. Inurnment will be Barrancas National Cemetery onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola at a later date. To send condolences, visit www.harpermorrismemorialchapel.com.
