IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert E.
Gilbert
April 21, 1942 – October 22, 2022
Robert Errett Gilbert, 80, of Pensacola, FL passed away Saturday, October 22, 2022.
Robert was born April 21, 1942, to the late Lucille Metz Gilbert and Hugh Walter Gilbert in Louisville, KY.
While studying chemical engineering at Georgia Tech University, he met his wife and partner of 56 years, Ona Tift McGough, a young Delta stewardess from southern Georgia. He and Ona married in October 1966.
After graduation, Mr. Gilbert was commissioned as an officer in the US Army. He served as leader of a team of Army engineers posted alongside the Marines at Khe Sanh. He took great care of his platoon during the Tet Offensive and tried his best to get them back home.
After his service overseas he focused on career and family, settling first in Augusta, GA. In 1975 he brought his young family to Pensacola and began his professional tenure at Air Products, Inc., from which he retired in 2006.
Robert always preferred to be productive with his time, and he especially enjoyed helping others. He helped build numerous houses with Habitat for Humanity and volunteered at Loaves and Fishes and Gulf Coast Kids House.
He was a knowledgeable fisherman and gardener and loved to be outdoors with his close friends, sons, and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by his two sons, John (Kellie) Gilbert of Orlando, and Jeffrey Gilbert of Pensacola; grandchildren, Clay Gilbert and Kara Gilbert of Orlando; brother, Jeff (Jill) Gilbert of Houston, and sister, Victoria Gilbert Comer of Nashville; also, his beloved extended family, nieces, nephews, and friends.
