Robert Hugo Glaves, 83, of Pensacola, FL passed away in Waxahachie, Texas with his son Bruce by his side after a long battle with Alzheimers disease. Captain Glaves was born to James R. and Eleanor Glaves in Long Beach California on March 15, 1929, then moved to Los Angeles. Bob attended Dorsey High School where he met and married his High School sweetheart Lois Marie. Together, Bob and Lois lived in San Jose while Bob attended San Jose State University pursuing a degree in Kinesiology and played for both the basketball and baseball team. Bob had intended on a career as a baseball coach (for the love of the game), but as fate would have it, Bob entered the United States Navy where his journey as a pilot began and quickly became his passion. Captain Glaves Naval career spanned from 1954 until retirement in 1982. During his career, Bob and Lois lived in various locations across the country and traveled the globe during his deployments. His flying career included 4 tours in Vietnam. He was awarded the Air Medal w/2 Silver Stars, Navy Unit Commendation, Distinguished Flying Cross, Navy Commendation Medal w/Gold Star and Combat V, National Defense Medal w/Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal w/3 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and Meritorious Service Medal. Bob accumulated 4155 flight hours mainly in the F4 Phantom. Upon retirement from the U.S. Navy, Bob and Lois relocated to Pensacola where it all began. He continued his passion for flying under civilian contract training U.S. Naval Aviators for the next 20 years. Bob was an inspiration to all, both as a Naval Officer and father. He was well respected by all members of the community for his integrity and character. Bob enjoyed many things throughout his life to include all sports and a love for animals. He was our protector, mentor, friend and Dad. We will miss him tremendously. His brother, James & wife Kay Glaves; daughter, Jody & husband Mike Kusick; son, Bruce & wife Julie Glaves; daughter, Dana Newman & granddaughter Megan Glaves, survive Bob. A Memorial Service will be held in Pensacola on August 24, 2012 at Perdido Bay United Methodist Church at 1:00pm. Rev. Dr. Darren McClellan will officiate. Inurnment will follow at 2:00pm at Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Captain Robert H.
