Lt. Col. Robert "Bob" Leonard Modjeski, USMC, ret., 83, of Pensacola, FL passed away Saturday, August 22, 2015 from an embolism and having battled throat cancer for several months. Bob was born in Chicago, IL and spent his younger years in Fontana, WI. He was a graduate of Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA and commissioned in the USMC by General Lemual Shepard on March 21, 1952. He went on to lead The Machine Gun Platoon of I-Company 2/8 at Camp LeJeune, NC. Later he served as Guard Officer at Marine Barracks, Naples, Italy, between 1956 and 1958. He served as CO Marine Detachment of the USS Long Beach and the USS Randolph between 1961 and 1963, including Officer of the Day Underway on both ships. In 1967 and 1968 he was the Marine Officer Instructor at Marquette University. Lt. Col. Modjeski went on to serve in Vietnam in 1969 as the CO of 2/9, 3rd Marine Division in combat. He retired in 1979 after receiving many awards including the Legion of Merit with Combat V. He entered the civilian workforce at Raytheon in Arlington, VA and later at Ciscon in Arlington, VA. Bob and Ivy traveled extensively during their 37 years of marriage, to Europe, Asia, South America, Australia and New Zealand. His greatest joy was singing in the choirs of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Alexandria, VA and Christ Church, Pensacola, FL and the Pensacola Choral Society. His baritone voice was heard at numerous weddings both in our country and in England. He used to say, "He was spared from war to sing in church.". He is preceded in death by his parents, Bernice and John Kowalczyk; daughter, Maurine Modjeski-Patton; and son, Robert Modjeski, Jr. Survivors include his loving wife of 37 years, Ivy Modjeski; son, LeLand Modjeski; daughter, Kimberly Richardson; son, Thomas Modjeski; step-son, Scott Chriss; step-daughter, Tracey Callahan, as well as a grandson, John Patton. Visitation will be held 5-7pm Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, 2276 Airport Blvd., Pensacola, FL. Funeral Service will be held 10:00am Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at Christ Church, 18 W. Wright St., Pensacola, FL with Rev. Fr. Neal Goldsborough officiating. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola Naval Air Station at 11:45am with Full Marine Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Church Music Fund, Christ Church, 18 W. Wright St., Pensacola, FL 32501.
