Roger George MacDonald, longtime Pensacola resident died Friday, June 5, 2015 at the age of 84. Roger was born January 29, 1931 and raised in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. He graduated from Lake Forest College in 1952. Upon graduation, he entered the Navy and went through flight training at Pensacola NAS, where he flew A4s; this time spent in Pensacola began his lifelong love for the area. After 7 years of active duty, he continued in the Navy Reserves, eventually retiring as Commander. In civilian life, he turned his energies into building a business, and established the Manpower Temporary Services office in Pensacola. Over the years, with the help of his wife Mary Anne, his business grew and expanded to include additional offices in seven cities along the Gulf Coast. Roger's passion and intense engagement in life was evident in countless ways. He was a highly competitive and accomplished tennis player, and did much to promote and encourage tennis in the Pensacola area. He also supported many other sports and cultural events; in early 2015 he was acknowledged in the Pensacola News Journal as "Pensacola's Number 1 Fan", a designation he richly deserved. Roger was a member of the Pensacola Sports Association Hall of Fame. He was an active Rotarian for the last 35 years, serving as President of the Pensacola Rotary Club. He also was Past District Governor of Northwest Florida District #6940, as well as a Paul Harris Fellow. Roger was an involved member of St Christopher's Episcopal Church, serving several times on the vestry, and a longtime member of the Choir. While he gave much to organizations, he was willing to give of himself as well. In 1972 he donated a kidney to his brother Doug, Two decades later his remaining kidney failed, so he himself was a transplant recipient. He then threw himself into competing in both the US and International Transplant Olympics, over the years competing in several countries and winning numerous medals in tennis and other fields. Roger is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Anne, and 5 children: Linda MacDonald Scarritt (Tommy), Susan MacDonald Butterfield, Sally Ruth MacDonald, Daniel McCoy (Denise), John David McCoy, and 8 grandchildren. The family is deeply appreciative to the physicians and health care professionals who cared for Roger over the years. Funeral services will be begin 10:30 am Thursday, June 11, 2015 At St. Christopher's Episcopal Church. 3200 N. 12th Ave. Burial immediately after at Holy Cross Cemetery, followed by a reception in the parish hall. Bow ties encouraged.
