Obituary

Ronald Stewart McCuiston, EdD, 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by his children, Mark McCuiston and Lisa Patrick, on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.

Ron was the son of the late Claude Stewart McCuiston and Lula Mae Hobbie McCuiston. He was born July 5, 1935, and attended grammar school in Mobile, AL followed by graduation from Murphy High School in 1952. He was awarded a Naval ROTC scholarship to attend Auburn University, graduating in 1957. During his midshipman cruises, he served aboard the Naval Command Cruiser USS Northampton CLC-1. This was a unique ship designed as a safe haven for the President and Joint Chiefs of Staff in the event of a Soviet nuclear attack. In 1961, he married Peggy Lou Ratliff in Mobile, AL and began teaching mathematics at Azalea Road Junior High School. He also taught at UMS in Mobile. After obtaining a master's from LSU and a doctorate in education from the University of Georgia, he became a professor of mathematics at Pensacola Junior College in 1971, retiring in 2003. During his tenure, he was Chief Negotiator for the PJCFA and worked diligently advocating for faculty compensation.

After retiring, he and Peggy cruised the world and enjoyed Mardi Gras balls with dear friends. In 2021, he moved into assisted living in Huntsville, AL to be closer to his family. He quickly adapted to his new living arrangements, making new friends and enjoying outings in the Huntsville area. A social media aficionado, he was known far and wide for his zany and quirky sense of humor, as well as his love for a great pun!

Finally, he was a staunch advocate for his granddaughter, Abigail Patrick, always searching for ways to make her life better and more inclusive. His love for his grandchildren, Shea, Abigail, Amira and Adam was apparent to all. We will miss him dearly.

He is preceded in death by his parents and son, Michael Stewart McCuiston.

Survivors include his daughter, Lisa McCuiston Patrick; son, Mark McCuiston (Dima); grandchildren, Abigail Patrick, Shea Patrick, Amira Grace McCuiston, and Adam McCuiston.
