Obituary

Dr. Roy Wayne Miller passed away on January 8th, 2023, while living in Fairhope, AL. He was 87 years old. He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy Franklin Miller and Nina Shuping Miller of Salisbury, NC, and sister Frances Ann Miller Keith of Apex, NC.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Patricia George Miller: sons, Alan Wayne Miller, of Atlanta, GA, Mark Andrew (Elizabeth) Miller, of Gulf Breeze, FL, Scott Franklin  (Frances) Miller, of Landenberg, PA; daughter Nina Kathryn (Robert) Merritt, of Pensacola, FL; six grandchildren, Kevin Hamilton Miller and Jackson Kanne Miller, of Gulf Breeze, FL, Alexandra Shae Miller and Avery Kate Miller, of Landenberg, PA, and Dr. Tyler Joseph (Laura) Merritt, of Pensacola, FL and Dr. Taylor Anne Merritt, of Dallas, TX; numerous cousins, and brother-in-law Richard Lambert George of Virginia Beach, VA.

Wayne was born and raised in Salisbury, NC, attending Wiley and Henderson elementary schools. Graduating from Boyden High School, he played basketball and was the drum major of the band. In 1957 he graduated from the University of North Carolina with a degree in Philosophy. In 1961 he graduated from the UNC with a degree of Medical Doctor. This was followed by internship, residency, and fellowship at the Veterans Administration and Emory University Hospitals in Atlanta, GA with a degree in Endocrinology and Renal Diseases. He then served two years as a Captain in the United States Air Force in Montgomery, AL at Maxwell AF Base. He also spent several months with Dr. Dale Lindholm at the Tulane Nephrology Section in New Orleans, LA.

In 1967 he joined the Medical Center Clinic in Pensacola, FL until his retirement in 1999. He became Treasurer and President of the MCC PA, a member and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of West Florida Regional Hospital. During those years, he actually admitted the first patient to the Hospital. He also had patients in Baptist and Sacred Heart Hospitals. His activities included Medical Director of the Northwest Artificial Kidney Center, and later Medical Director of the MCC Dialysis Center.  Wayne was active in the Escambia County Medical Society, Florida Medical Association, Renal Physicians Association, American Medical Association, American Society of Nephrology, ESRD Network #19 of Florida, Florida Kidney Foundation, National Kidney Foundation, with a year as President of The Florida Society of Nephrology, Cub Master of Pack 418 Boy Scouts, Mustang Club, RV Club, and Pensacola Antique Dealers Association.

Wayne was dedicated to the care of his patients, following the multiple activities of his children and grandchildren, and enjoyed reading, gardening, RVing, and viewing college basketball, especially the UNC Tarheels.  His gentle disposition and comforting voice will be missed by all that knew and loved him.

A celebration of life and placement of his ashes in a columbarium is planned for immediate family at the First United Methodist Church where he was a long-time member and usher.  In lieu of flowers, the family wishes to have donations made to First United Methodist Church in Pensacola, FL.
