Obituary

Ruth Burton Campbell, age 93, of Pensacola died peacefully Sunday, May 18, 2014. Mrs. Campbell was born November 25, 1920 in Flemington, WV to Bonnie Lucille (Batson) and Frank Howard Burton. Her lifelong love of music was inspired by her father, a coal miner who enjoyed playing the violin. Mrs. Campbell earned a business degree after high school and moved to New York City where she worked for Western Union. During WWII, she was in the U.S. Marine Corps for three years and served as an aviation machinist mate. Throughout her life, she was proud to be from the hills of West Virginia and to have served in the Marines. Following her marriage to Capt. Phillip R. Campbell in 1945, she studied piano at the Cincinnati Conservatory and the University of Miami. Mrs. Campbell taught piano for over 45 years, inspiring her students to love music and strive for excellence. A member of the Pensacola and Florida State Music Teachers Associations from 1969-2003, she held numerous leadership positions and devoted countless hours to music education for children. In addition to teaching piano, Mrs. Campbell worked as a secretary and office manager for Century 21 realtors. She retired at the age of 80. Mrs. Campbell joined First United Methodist Church in 1969. When she experienced difficult life challenges, Mrs. Campbell's quiet courage, personal faith, independent spirit, and sense of humor sustained her and her loved ones. Mrs. Campbell was preceded in death by her parents; five siblings; and Capt. Phillip R. Campbell, her beloved husband of 57 years. She is survived by her sister, Jo Ann Burton Edwards; her brother, J. Thomas Burton and her children; Karen Campbell Porter, Phillip Kevin Campbell (Sarah), Kimberleigh Campbell Schenck (Robert), Kent Howard Campbell (Kay) and Keith Bradley Campbell (Colleen). Mrs. Campbell is also survived by her grandchildren; David, Holly, Angela, Sally, Jennifer, Rebecca, Amanda, Sandy and Paige; and her great-grandchildren, Ava, McKenzie and Scott. The funeral cortege will depart at 9:45 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2014 from Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel for a 10:15 a.m. Graveside service with military honors at Barrancas National Cemetery.
