Our mother, Ruth Jones Hunt Little, peacefully departed this life on February 18, 2013, at the age of 97. Ruth was born on October 20, 1915, a native of Calhoun, GA. She was the daughter of Charles Wells Hunt, and Georgia Finch Jones Hunt, and sister of John Moore Hunt, Charles Carter Hunt, Frank David Hunt, Georgia Hunt Elsberry, and Mary Kane Hunt. Ruth graduated from Calhoun High School before attending and graduating from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA, in 1937. During her college years, she met William Odis Little, who was attending Emory University near Atlanta. They subsequently married, and moved to Chicago, IL, where our father attended the Chicago Medical School. During World War II, Ruth worked for Time Magazine, while her husband worked for the Department of Defense. After the war, Ruth dedicated herself to raising her two children, and supporting her husband in his medical practice. During the thirty years Ruth and Odis lived in and enjoyed Chicago, she was a Cub Scout Leader, a member of the Chicago Women's Club, the South Shore Country Club, the Germania Club, and a lifetime member of the Art Institute of Chicago. During this time, Ruth was also active in civic activities in her husband's home town of Red Level, AL. She was instrumental in organizing the first horse show in Red Level in 1963. She used her talents and gifts in helping to secure the Lurlene B. Wallace Junior College in Covington County, AL. In 1970, Ruth returned with her husband to Red Level, AL, making it their year round home. She then became more active in the local community, serving on the Mental Health Board, the Ballet Society, the Board of the Junior College, and other organizations where she could be of service. It was through her efforts and those of Dr. Little that the tri-county Medical Association came to serve Red Level, and surrounding areas. Ruth remained a member of the Calhoun Presbyterian Church throughout her life. She lived a life of service, and set an example for all of us; including her son, William Odis Little; her daughter, Mary Little Mattair (Lloyd); granddaughter, Amanda Everhart Mattair and grandson Lloyd Joseph Mattair, III. Ruth resided in Gulf Breeze, FL, for the last few years. Visitation will be held 1:00pm until the Funeral Service to begin at 2:00pm Thursday, February 21, 2013 at Foreman Brown Funeral Home, U.S. 84, by-pass road east, Andalusia, AL. Burial will immediately follow at the Fairmount Baptist Church Cemetery in Red Level, AL. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Town of Red Level, AL for needed landscaping improvements. We are thankful to the members of Emerald Coast Hospice for their gentle and loving care of our mother, to the staff of the memory care unit at the Blake, and above all to Dr. Amos Prevatt.
