He was born October 19, 1927, in Athens, Georgia, to Samuel Means Boney and Kathryn Ashford Boney.

In his early childhood, the family moved to Jackson, Tennessee, and in 1932 they settled in Nashville where Sam grew up. He attended schools in Nashville then completed his last 2 years of high school at the Sewanee Military Academy in Sewanee, Tennessee, in 1946.

That same year, he joined the US Marines where he served for 2 years. After discharge, he attended the University of Virginia, the University of Georgia, and the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, from which he graduated in 1955.

He met and married Marcia Kline in 1955 and subsequently graduated from the School of Theology at the University of the South in 1958. He was ordained to the Episcopal priesthood that same year when he became vicar of Christ Church in Brownsville, Tennessee, and Immanuel Episcopal Church in Ripley, Tennessee.

In 1960, the Boneys were called to Dyersburg, Tennessee, where he was the Rector of St. Mary's Episcopal Church for 20 years. While in Dyersburg, he was active in the community and in Episcopal diocesan affairs, and he served as president of the local Ministerial Association and chairman of the board of the West Tennessee Regional Library Association.

In 1982, Sam and Marcia moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he became the Assistant Rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and in 1984, they moved to Jackson, Mississippi, where he was named Canon Pastor at St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral.

He retired in 1992 to Pensacola, Florida, and he and Marcia moved to Azalea Trace in 2001. They were frequent travelers, lovers of symphonic music, opera, and the ballet, and active members of Christ Church Pensacola. Marcia died in September 2015 and Sam continued to live an active and engaged life at Azalea Trace.
