Obituary

Norborne Alexander "Sandy" Brown, Jr. died Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at Azalea Trace in Pensacola, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Son of Norborne A. and Mollie Logan Brown, he was born in Pensacola April 9, 1935, and graduated from Pensacola High School in 1953.

Sandy graduated with honors from the University of the South in Sewanee, TN, where he was president of his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi. After graduate work at the University of North Carolina he returned to Sewanee for a year as an economics instructor. He served in the US Army in the late 1950s, then accepted a position in New York City, where he and Sallie lived after their marriage in 1960. In 1965, he joined Scott, Foresman, and Company, a large educational publishing company, and the family, now with two boys in tow, moved to southern Florida, where their third son was born. In 1970, the company moved them to Tallahassee, and in 1979 to the regional offices in Atlanta. In retirement Sandy lived first in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, then Pensacola in 2018.

A lifelong Episcopalian, Sandy has been active in his church wherever he lived, serving as a vestryman, a chalice bearer, a Eucharistic visitor, and in many volunteer positions. He was also a longtime Rotarian, president of two of his Rotary clubs, and both a Paul Harris and Will Watt Fellow. In retirement he was a faithful weekly driver for Meals on Wheels. He read deeply and widely, loved to travel, and was never happier than when hiking a trail. His best service was to his family, for whom he will always be the greatest example of quiet humor, steadfast faith, and kind heartedness.

He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Nancy Brown Maloy.

Sandy is survived by his wife, Sallie Hart Brown; three sons, Norborne Alexander Brown III, Christopher Logan Brown (Juliet), and Daniel Hart Brown (Maggie); six grandchildren, Mary Jessica Brown Minch (Taylor), Sara Ashley Brown, Alexander Burton Brown, Mollie Logan Brown, and Abigail McColl Brown; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Bob, Anne, Chris, and Jodee Hart, and by a host of friends and relatives in Pensacola and all over the country.

A Memorial Service will be 11:00am, Monday, December 5, 2022, at Christ Episcopal Church.

The family invites donations to the church's Outreach Fund, c/o Christ Episcopal Church, 18 W. Wright St., Pensacola, FL 32501; or to any worthy cause.
