Obituary

Santiago Herrera, 24, of Pensacola, FL passed away on Monday, January 20, 2014. Santiago was born on May 1, 1989 in New Orleans, LA. Santiago and his family ultimately moved to Pensacola, FL where he grew up. He was a graduate of St. Michael's Interparochial School, Pensacola Catholic High School, and a 2011 graduate of Auburn University. Through the years, Santi was an avid soccer player throughout his life and enjoyed playing tennis as well. His love of sports helped fuel his love of working out and being healthy. Ever since 7th grade, Santi knew he wanted to be in the military, always proud to serve this country. He was a member of ROTC at Auburn. He loved to travel and studied in Barcelona for a semester in 2010, where he was able to put to use his trilingual skills. Santiago also traveled to numerous countries, such as Italy, Greece, Switzerland, France, Germany and others. Upon his graduation at Auburn, he completed his Army basic training and Officer Candidacy School at Ft. Benning, GA. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. He then went on to complete military police school at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO and became an Army reserve military police officer. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Matias Herrera. Santiago is survived by German Herrera, his father; Rosie Herrera, his mother; Mariana Herrera, his sister; Saturia Herrera, his paternal grandmother; Jaime and Rosalba Castaeda, his maternal grandparents. He also has numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins who reside in Bogota, Colombia. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 24, 2014 from 5-7pm at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Paul's Catholic Church at 11am on Saturday, January 25, 2014. Inurnment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Christopher Frasse, Robert Guilfoyle, Carlos Alberto Herrera, Patrick LaPorte, Brian Moyer and Kyle Ottley. Because of his love of animals, donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Pensacola Humane Society, 5 N. "Q" St., Pensacola, FL 32505 or the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org
