Sarah F. Katis, 85, of Pensacola, FL, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 11, 2026. She was born February 8, 1940, in Gordo, AL, to Thomas and Euline Cunningham. Sarah grew up in rural Alabama working on a farm with her brothers James, Leon, and Joe, and one sister, Louise.
At age 16, Sarah married Jerry Wilson who served his country in the Army. The couple moved often, living in Mobile, AL; Sacramento, CA; and Steens MS, before moving to Pensacola. Sarah and Jerry had one child, Melanie.
Sarah later married Richard F. Katis, who died of colon cancer and then wed William M. Flynn (Bill), a kind and loving husband who had three sons—Joseph, Michael, and Daniel. During Sarah's marriage to Bill, she became highly involved in the Catholic church, attending mass regularly and volunteering on the bereavement and other committees. Sarah's volunteer work in the community was extensive and continued until the day of her death. She held a particular fondness for her time as President of the Garden Club.
Sarah was a long-time member of the Pensacola community. She worked for Florida Drum Company, Bank of Pensacola, and Westinghouse before retiring. Even in retirement, Sarah continued to serve her valued clients with her Mary Kay cosmetic business.
Sarah enjoyed spending time with her family and many, many friends. Her extremely humble beginnings allowed her to live with great joy and gratitude. She was a fierce supporter and advocate for her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family. Sarah was a wonderful cook who insisted on feeding everyone who visited her. She was gritty and kind. She had a smile and kind word for everyone, having never met a stranger. She was eminently positive, an optimist to the very end.
Sarah is survived by her daughter, Melanie, sons Joe, Mike, and Dan, as well as her daughters in law Norma and Kim, as well as four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, 9945 Hillview Dr, Pensacola, FL 32514, with Fr. Hank Lech as the celebrant.
