IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sarah Ann
Mosko
October 12, 1942 – August 15, 2024
In the movie It's a Wonderful World, we are told when a bell rings, an angel is getting its wings. On August 15, 2024, bells pealed for Sarah Ann Mosko (nee High). She is preceded in death by her parents, Elinor and Henry, and a brother, Tom. Her husband, Jim; a daughter, Chelsea; and a brother and sister-in-law, Philip and Phyllis High survive her.'
Candy graduated from West Chester Joint Senior High School in West Chester, Pennsylvania. She graduated as the Valedictorian of her class. Her activities during her high school years included Candy Stripers, varsity tennis team, varsity field hockey team, district chorus, editor of the yearbook and Tri-Hi-Y. (The sobriquet "Candy" was given her during her high school years when she served as a Candy Striper.) Following high school, Candy entered Bloomsburg State College in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Pathology. Candy entered Purdue University immediately after college to pursue an advanced degree. She obtained a Master of Science degree in Speech Pathology in 1967. Candy and Jim were married at Purdue on January 22, 1966, in a Roman Catholic ceremony.
Candy's professional career began as an Assistant Clinical Professor at West Virginia University and Medical School. She taught undergraduate and graduate courses in Child Development, Language Development, Anatomy and Physiology, and Clinical Methods. Candy also supervised clinical practice. Her professional career continued at Fort Knox, Kentucky where she provided Speech Therapy services for the post's school system.
In 1973, after giving birth to daughter Chelsea, Candy arrived in Pensacola to serve as a Speech Therapist in the Escambia County Public School District. Among the various capacities she served in the Exceptional Student Education Department (ESE) during her 40 years tenure in the district were: Speech Therapist; Diagnostic Speech Therapist; and Assistive Technology Coordinator. According to her colleagues, Candy's most valuable contributions to the ESE Department were her analytical abilities, communication skills, and her tenacious desire to make certain the children received the services they required. She abhorred office politics.
Candy gleaned from her friends and colleagues lifelong love and admiration which she reciprocated. With her friends she enjoyed a creative, humorous, and giving nature. The travel saga of the pink flamingos, Fla and Mingo, perpetrated by one ornery friend, captured the imagination and interest of the group and Pensacola at large. A particular joy for Candy was her art and ceramics creations. The joy was derived from being able to give friends gifts of paintings, ceramic pottery, and Christmas tree ornaments. She always gave a bit of herself. Creativity and classical music were her mantras throughout her life.
The First United Methodist Church of Pensacola (FUMC) was Candy's choice of a place to worship. She loved the theological emphasis of the classes and sermons given by Rev. Doc. Henry Roberts and Rev. Doc. Wesley Wachob. She wanted to be taught, not preached to. She received a religious education at FUMC. Her participation in Serving the Hungry was a special part of her life there. The acquaintances and friends she made there were a joy for her soul.
Candy was a wife, mother, and professional. An anonymous writer penned the word wife means, "Witty, Intelligent, Faithful, and Exotic, and you better believe it, Buster." Candy was all of these and more. Dr. Seuss wrote, "To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world." The one person exists.
