Obituary

SgtMaj Philip F. O'Donnell, USMC (Ret.), 77, of Pensacola, FL, passed away on Friday, July 7, 2023, after a short illness.

Phil was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA and enlisted in the Marine Corps at 17. He was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in Viet Nam in Operation Starlight in 1965. During 30 years of active-duty service, he served in Reconnaissance, was a Drill Instructor at NAS Pensacola, an ROTC instructor at the University of Virginia, and he was a Naval certified diver. In his spare time, Phil liked to parachute, run marathons, and cook for his family and friends.

After retiring in 1993, he was involved with the Escambia County Master Gardeners and was an active member of the Pensacola Model Railroad Club.

Phil is preceded in death by his son, Philip F. O'Donnell II; his parents, William J. and Eleanor O'Donnell; and four brothers, William J. Jr, Lawrence, Dennis, and Andrew.

Phil is survived by his wife of 55 years, Connie; their daughter, Ann Marie Lucas of Raleigh NC, son in law Chuck, and grandsons, Charles and David; brother, Jerry O'Donnell and sister, Eleanor O'Donnell-Landry both of Philadelphia, PA. As well as numerous nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be held 5:00pm-7:00pm Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. A funeral procession will leave Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel at 12:00pm Thursday, July 13, 2023, to go to Lady of Loretto Catholic Church (NAS Pensacola) for the Funeral Mass to be Celebrated at 1:00pm. A graveside service will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery.
