A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, February 7, 2015 for Shirley Laurent Post, 92, a Fairhope resident for 49 years. The Mass will be held at 11:00am at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 370 S. Section St., Fairhope, AL. The family will greet friends at the church from 10:00am to 11:00am preceding the Mass. A Bereavement Luncheon will follow in the Parish Hall. The Committal Service will be at Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola Naval Air Station, on Monday, February 9, 2015 at 9:30am. Shirley passed away peacefully Monday, January 19, 2015 in Gulf Breeze, FL, surrounded by her loving family. Her parents and her beloved husband, William L. (Willie) Post preceded her in death. She is survived by her sons, John L. Post, Sr. (Jeanne) and William L. Post, Jr. (Catti); precious grandchildren, Stephanie (Aaron Bernard), John Leo, Eric and Sara; darling great-granddaughter, Demory Anne; cherished sisters, Lois Finney of New Orleans, LA and Ruth Keller of Lafayette, LA; and a host of treasured relatives and friends. Shirley was born on August 27, 1922, in Norco, LA to the late John Leo and Milda (Lula) Falcon Laurent. The family moved to Houston in 1930 and to Arkansas City, KS, in 1937. In 1940, the family returned to St. Charles Parish. Shirley completed her bachelor's degree in Home Economics at Southwestern Louisiana Institute of Liberal and Technical Learning (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette). After graduating, she worked as a quality control technician at the New Orleans Refining Company. On November 18, 1944, she married Willie Post of Duson, LA, who was then serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. In July 1955 Shirley moved with her family to Venezuela where Willie was employed as a Chemical Engineer for Creole Oil, a branch of Standard Oil. Between 1955 and 1966 they lived in Caracas, La Salina, Tamare and Tia Juana (Campo Verde). During that time Shirley was an elementary school teacher. The family settled in Fairhope, AL in 1966 and Shirley taught at Fairhope Elementary School. In 1968, when Willie accepted the Refinery Manager position with the Puerto Limon RECOPE Oil Refinery, Shirley moved with Willie to Limon, Costa Rica. When they returned to Fairhope in 1970, Shirley resumed teaching at Fairhope Elementary School. She loved her students and was awarded the PTSA Outstanding Educator of the Year for the school year 1983-1984. She retired from teaching in 1986 and remained active for many years in the Baldwin County Retired Educators Association. Shirley was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and a frequent participant in activities at the James P. Nix Center. She was an avid reader and a delightful conversationalist. She enjoyed activities with friends-swimming, aerobics, walks along Fairhope's big pier, in the orchard and at Gulf Shores. She made friends wherever she went and was endlessly kind and helpful to those she knew and loved. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the South Baldwin Literacy Council, 21441 U.S Hwy. 98 E., Foley, AL 36535 or to St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 370 S. Section St., Fairhope, AL 36532.
