January 14, 1922 – January 11, 2021
Sissie Perry, a native of Philadelphia, PA, and resident of Pensacola since 1965, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2021 just 4 days shy of her 99 th birthday. Married to Captain John Edward Perry, USN, Sissie was a "career military wife" who provided tremendous support to John throughout his Navy career, as well as raising 6 children along the way.
During her 56 years in Pensacola, Sissie was a pillar of the community active in many organizations including President of the Officer's Wives League and Board of Directors for the American Red Cross. However, her most ambitious and rewarding contribution was her devotion to Pensacola Catholic Charities. For over 25 years, she worked tirelessly with the Catholic Charities family, living by their motto each day, "assist the poor and cherish, preserve and uphold the dignity of life". She was instrumental in starting the annual Charity Gala for Catholic Charities in Pensacola, as well as annual charity events associated with the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel.
Sissie was honored to be awarded the Cross Pro Ecclesia and Pontifice from Pope John Paul II on September 10, 2000. This award is bestowed on lay persons who have given outstanding service to the Catholic Church and the last time the award was bestowed in the church of Northwest Florida was 1980.
In addition to her late husband, John, Sissie is preceded in death by her first husband, Eugene R. Flathmann; her mother, Mary Devine Kempf; her father, John Harry Kempf; and her siblings, Mollie, Buddy and John.
She is survived by her sons, Gene Flathmann (Cindy) and Robert Flathmann (JJ); her daughters, Susan Weaver (Keith), Timmie Murphy (Steve), Patty Pereira (Gene), and Jackie Sanborn (Kurt); her grandchildren, Mary Baldwin, Teresa Giles, Gene Flathmann III, Perry Flathmann, Jennifer Horgan, Major Keith Weaver III, Steve Murphy II, Ryan Murphy, Sarah Claire Sanborn, Susan Sanborn and 11 great-grandchildren.
