Obituary

Susan Barron Barrett passed away peacefully on November 27, 2013, at the age of 96. She was the wife of the late Hoshall Stafford Barrett, Sr., the love of her life. He preceded her in death by 38 years, yet she vigilantly kept his memory alive for the remainder of her days. Susan was born on September 6, 1917, in Cave Spring, GA, growing up to explore the caves and forests of the area, which gave life to her many stories. She moved with family from Atlanta, GA to Pensacola in 1956. A gifted writer and master storyteller, Susan was also a talented seamstress, a self-taught organist and an accomplished Irish-crochet artist. Her work was intricate and she often dyed her own yarn for crewel embroidery. A life-long learner, Susan was a voracious and eclectic reader as evidenced by her extensive library. She was proud to have completed a college degree in her later years. Susan was a former Pensacola Realtor and a woman of many interests. She especially enjoyed boating, picnicking and spending time with her family. A natural born care giver, she nurtured sick family members in her youth and was an exceptional Mother. She was predeceased by her adoring husband of 38 years, Hoshall S. Barrett, Sr.; her beloved parents, Thomas Lemuel Barron and Mary Susan Barron; siblings, Mary Alice, Dorothy, Margaret, Tom and Virginia; and great-grandchildren, Jack, Hannah Beth and Rhaya. Susan is survived by her sister, Sara B. Nelson (Centenarian); son, Dr. Hoshall Stafford Barrett, Jr., a Vietnam Veteran, (Rose Merle); daughter, Carolyn Barrett Couch (Dr. John A. Couch); grandchildren, Cathy Brooks (Lon), John Couch, Jr., Hoshall Stafford Barrett, III (Rebecca), Retta Wagner (John) and Suzanne Maguire (Brian); great-grandchildren, Natalie Brooks, Carrie Brooks, Roselynn Wagner, Rory Wagner, Riley Barrett, Barrett Maguire and Mary Etta Maguire; as well as many nieces and nephews. Susan loved birds, and when asked why, she would always say, "Because they are free!" and now so is she. Visitation will be held 1:00pm with the Funeral Service to begin at 2:00pm Sunday, December 1, 2013 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, 2276 Airport Blvd., with Rev. Ken Griffin officiating. Burial will be at Bayview Memorial Park on Monday, December 2, 2013. The family expresses appreciation to Bay Breeze Nursing and Retirement Center and to Covenant Hospice for their care.
