Obituary

Susan McVea Ragan, 83, of Pensacola, FL, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, with her loving family by her side. She was diagnosed with melanoma in 2016 and underwent many surgeries and infusions at The Woodlands and MD Anderson. Susan endured a long struggle with the effects of melanoma and responded with remarkable grace and courage. She was an inspiration to everyone who knew her.

Susan was the only daughter of Winston and Elva Kean McVea of Baton Rouge and Zachary, LA. She was born and raised in Louisiana and was a graduate of Zachary High School. She earned a BA from Louisiana State University and attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, Centenary College, and the University of Paris in France.

In 1978, Susan moved to Pensacola, FL, where she maintained a strong and active commitment to the community. She was a member of the Pensacola Symphony Guild and the Pensacola Museum of Art Guild, and she served for several years on the Board of Directors of the Pensacola Museum of Art. Other memberships included the Ladybugs Garden Club and the Junior League of Pensacola. One of her proudest achievements was receiving the Joan Gonzalez Award in 2013. This award is presented to the Sustainer who exemplifies continued service to the Junior League and the community.

Susan was a co-owner of Fiddlestix, a children's store she operated for 25 years alongside Linda Pallin, Lynn Zorn, and Diane Gup. During its years of operation, the store received numerous national awards. She was also a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and established an Endowment Scholarship at Pensacola State College.

She is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Winston McVea and Richard McVea.

Survivors include her daughter, Laura Bogan (Christopher), son, Richard Scott Ragan; and one grandson, Winston Bogan; her sister-in-law, Catherine McVea of Ruston, LA. Susan leaves behind many cousins and close personal friends that she cherished dearly.

Special thanks for her journey of care that included the support of her friends, whom she valued greatly, palliative assistance, and her personal caretakers, Nicolle Scott and Eve Pfeiffenthaler.
