Obituary

The Reverend Anna Marie Butterbaugh, 59, of Pensacola, FL passed away Monday, March 6, 2017. She was presently serving in her sixth year as the Priest-in-Charge of St. John's Episcopal Church, Pensacola.

Rev. Butterbaugh was born Anna Marie Favre in Marianna, FL on June 18, 1957 but called Pensacola home. She graduated from Washington High School and received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of West Florida. She was Store Manager for Babcock Home Furnishings in Pensacola, Gadsden and Ft. Payne, AL and Chattanooga TN before her faith journey began calling her into a different vocation. She received a Master in Theological Studies from Spring Hill College in 2002 and completed four units of Clinical Pastoral Education while serving as Intern and then Resident Chaplain at Baptist Hospital. From 2003 until 2007 Marie was a Chaplain with Sacred Heart Hospital and then Chaplain and Pastoral Care Coordinator at The Haven where her pastoral ministries covered the spectrum of human life from Neonatal and Pediatric patients to those involved in rehabilitation and end of life decisions. In 2010 she received a Master in Divinity from The Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest, Austin, TX where she served on the Seminarian Leadership Counsel for two years and Mission Ministries in Mexico for three. With that graduation and ordination she brought her heart, faith and pastoral gifts to parish ministry as a priest.

Marie's ability to love and her sweet enthusiasm for life was perhaps matched by her enthusiasm for learning. Not only was she an avid reader on subjects as diverse as ethics, theology, social justice and the Roosevelt Family, the Civil War and Harry Potter, she earned Continuing Education Units in Medical Ethics, Ecumenical Ministries, Aging and Alzheimer's, Death and Dying. As a servant leader in the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast Marie served on the Teaching Staff for the Diaconal Training Program, as Dean of Summer Youth Camp for the past three years, Chairperson the Commission on Affirmative Aging and Chaplain for the Episcopal Church Women.

Marie's spirituality was much that of St. Francis with her commitment to serve Christ in all people, especially those most vulnerable; in her love of creatures "great and small" which included most especially her chickens and roosters, her dogs and the feral kittens she adopted and tamed; in her delight in gardening and the basic simplicity of cooking, baking and experimenting with recipes; in her generosity of spirit and substance; and a willingness to make sacrifices in the service of the Gospel.

At the heart of her life was an amazing partnership with her sweetheart of 43 years and beloved husband for almost 40, Timothy Ray Butterbaugh – a partnership of rare devotion and great love.

Preceded in death by her mother, Gerry Margaret Kaser and step father Robert Herrmann, Marie is survived by her husband, her father Charlie Favre and step-mother Shirley; a sister-in-law, The Rev. Peggy Buelow (Peter); brothers-in-law, John Butterbaugh (Stella) and George Butterbaugh; step-brothers Frank Favre and Darryl and Bobby Herrmann; numerous cousins; and 13 loving nephews and nieces: Christopher Hayes (Julie), Allison Hayes (Dominque), Ryan Hayes (Kristi), Christian Butterbaugh (Kim), Christy Darwin, Jonathan Butterbaugh, Haley Butterbaugh, Sherrie Butterbaugh, Erica Enns (Jonathan), Jenny Bailey (Steven), Nicholas Butterbaugh Megan Favre and Lewie Favre (Chelsea).

Her family is deeply touched and being sustained by the loving support they are receiving from the people of St. John's, the holy ministry of Bishop Russell and the out pouring of love from clergy colleagues and family and friends near and far. Such caring reminds us that the Reverend Anna Marie

Butterbaugh leaves a profound legacy to love's power to touch, to gladden, to heal and to transform lives. In the dear words of St. John's Parish Administrator, "while we share in the great pain of this loss, Marie would want us to celebrate her 'graduation' to the Angels, but of course, she always was one."

Visitation will be held 5:00 pm to 7:00pm Friday, March 10, 2017 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. We will celebrate Marie's life with The Burial Office and Eucharist at 11:00 am Saturday, March 11, 2017 at St. John's Episcopal Church, The Right Reverend Russell Kendrick presiding. The Parish is hosting a Reception immediately following the service. Inurnment will be at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, Pensacola at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, 401 Live Oak Avenue, Pensacola, FL 32507.
