Obituary

Thelma Smith Haskins, 86, of Pensacola, FL passed to a world of peace with her heavenly Father, early in the morning of February 29, 2016. She was born in Bloomingdale, OH on August 9, 1929, the daughter of the late Pressley A. Smith and Ruth P. Cline Smith. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, James E. Smith. Thelma was a 1947 graduate of Wayne Township High School with her two "bestest" life-long friends, Ruth Lucas Veigel of Gnadenhutten, OH and the late Helen Simmons Cusick.

She is survived by her husband, Jack L. Haskins of Pensacola and their son, Jack Stephen Haskins (Asma) of Alexandria, VA. She is also survived by Asma's two sons, Amer and Ahsen (Farheen) and their two children, Amel and Ghazi. She is survived by nieces, Karen (Mark) Swickard of Toronto, OH and Patti Jo (John) Liapakis of Orlando, FL; nephews, James T. (Sandra) Smith of Columbus, OH and J. Steven Smith of Dallas, TX and their children and grand-children. On her husband's side of the family she was preceded in death by mother-in-law, Myra Haskins; aunt, Bessie Bob Edge and by cousins, William B. McGraw and Braden Eubanks. She is survived by aunt, Margaret McGraw and cousins, Gail (Michael) Parks and Nichole (Bryan) Eubanks and their three children, Caleb, Conner and Paige.

Thelma was a loving wife, mother and mother-in-law. She loved her Lord and his Church. She read her Bible and devotional guide every morning. As a youth she and her "besties" were heavily involved in Billy Graham's Youth for Christ program and the Methodist Church in Bloomingdale. She and her family have been members of Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Pensacola for fifty years. She treasured the loving relationships she found in her many years in the Faithfinders and New Life Sunday School Classes.

Thelma loved to travel with her family. They began traveling with a small pop-up camper, increasing the size and convenience over the years to a 35 ft. motor home after Jack's retirement in 1996. For four years she even served as First Mate on their 27 ft. cabin cruiser. In 1984 the family (including husband, son, and aunt Margaret and Myra) went on a church-sponsored tour of the Holy Land, Egypt and the Oberammergau Passion play in Germany. After the tour, with husband and son, she continued to tour Europe, going to Germany, France, Switzerland and Great Britain. Thelma and Jack also rode the train to Phoenix, AZ to visit Stephen and to tour Canada from Toronto, through the Rockies to Vancouver. They cruised on the Queen Elizabeth 2 to South America, the Panama Canal and Mexico and took a small ship cruise to Alaska. For their fiftieth anniversary they cruised to and from Hawaii and among the islands, including a helicopter ride over an active volcano.
