Thomas B. Guthrie, 81, passed into eternity on Tuesday morning, January 21, 2014. Tom was born in Washington, D.C., the fifth of six children born to Ward and Bernadine Guthrie. He is survived by a sister, Mary Flynn of Germantown, MD and brother, James Guthrie of Silver Spring, MD; two daughters, Mary Beth Guthrie of Pensacola, FL and Jackie Yamada (Roger) of Altadena, CA; grandchildren, Megan M. Janezic (Dana) of Eugene, OR, Joshua Mitchell of Eugene, OR, Allison Mitchell of State College, PA and Michael Yamada of Altadena, CA as well as three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Tom served during the Korean War and on discharge from the Navy returned to his home town of Washington, D.C. to work alongside his father at Guthrie Lithograph. Relocating to Los Angeles, CA in 1974, he continued the family business with Guthrie Transportation Consultants. Tom came to faith in Jesus Christ not long after, forever changing his life. As a very active member of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, CA for approximately 25 years, he enjoyed teaching third grade Sunday School for about 10 years. Tom also was involved with ministries such as Discipleship Evangelism, Fishers of Men and Skid Row outreach. For almost a decade Tom also volunteered as a chaplain at County of Los Angeles Medical Center at USC. After 34 years in the L.A. Area, a major heart attack in 2008 moved Tom to Pensacola, FL to share a home with his daughter, Mary Beth. Always a hard worker, Tom's entrepreneurial spirit helped to build yet another business, Transport Financial Services. At 81, Tom continued to oversee TFS until a few weeks before his death. He was also an active member of Grace Community Church in Pensacola never losing his heart for evangelism and local outreach ministry. Theology and the study of the Bible were two of Tom's great passions. Combined with a keen interest in politics, history and current events, Tom had a gift for explaining these topics through the grid of scripture. Tom was also an avid golfer, first taking up the game at the age of 10. He played regularly, and participated in various benefit tournaments. Whether as father, friend or employer, Tom was a great mentor and advisor. His friendly, outgoing nature, his quick sense of humor and generosity will be greatly missed by both family and friends.
