Vausy Delona Elizabeth Shofner Burson, 102, of Pensacola, FL passed away Friday, April 19, 2019.
She was born at the Shofner homestead in Center Point, Howard County, Arkansas on February 17, 1917. Her father was Alonzo Clark Shofner and her mother was Fairis Eny Davis. Both were farmers and schoolteachers. Vausy spent the bulk of her childhood in Cordell, OK. She was the sixth of eight children. Her older siblings were Ina Dell, Emil, Vaughn, Elba and Nena. Her younger siblings were Wanda and Zanice. They are all deceased now. Vausy married Joseph Zachary Burson on July 12, 1941 in Chicago, IL. They met in Chicago after both had found employment there during the Depression and were living there with the advent of World War II. They moved to Peoria, IL where they lived 35+ years. They raised their five children there during this period.
She was raised in the Church of Christ in her youth. She converted to Roman Catholicism at the time of her marriage and remained in that faith until her death. Vausy lived her remaining years near her oldest son David, his wife and some extended family in Florida.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, in 1985; her son, Paul, in 2013 and her only daughter, Judith, in 2014.
She is survived by her sons, David, Thomas, James and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Committal Service will be held at 10:00am Tuesday, July 30, 2019 in the Mausoleum at Holy Cross Cemetery.
