Velma Faye
Garlington
February 25, 1937 – November 15, 2022
Velma Faye Davis Garlington, age 85, was called home on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, after a long battle with Polycythemia Vera and Renal Disease. Velma was born in Coolville, Ohio to the late Edward and Mildred Davis. In Addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a son, Ron McGown; two daughters, Marilise "Lisa" and Rhonda Lynn; a brother, Charles Davis and a sister, Florene Baker.
Velma was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who was a member of Perdido Bay United Methodist Church. She loved to create beautiful works of art through her quilting and sewing abilities. She was a true artist and loved to make the most beautiful quilts and treasures for her family.
Velma was married twice in her lifetime, first to Ronald McGown, with whom she had four beautiful children, Ron, Rhonda Lynn, Marilise "Lisa" and Sharon. She then spent several years as a single mother working hard as a Nurses Aid, at Sunland Center in Orlando and as a seamstress at the Dunes Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
She eventually met Henry Garlington, who was a career Navy man and the love of her life, they married and spent their lives traveling the world together. They first moved to Washington DC., where Henry retired from the Navy. He then went to work as a DOD Contractor which took them to England. They spent years exploring Europe, traveling to Western Europe and parts of Eastern Europe. They had wonder adventures together and saw a great many things.
After their retirement in 2021, they moved to Pensacola, Florida where Velma Spent the rest of her life enjoying her loved ones and the Florida sunshine. Velma was a beautiful, loving, patient and generous soul, all who knew her will miss her dearly.
Those left to cherish her memory include, her loving and devoted husband of 51 years, Henry Allen Garlington; her daughter, Sharon Powell (Joe); six grandchildren, Meagan Shows (Josh), Amanda Spires (Drew), Maria Simmons (Randy), Kevin Flynn, Elaine Thompson (Scotty) and Heather Springfield (Brandon); thirteen great grandchildren, Gideon Shows, Brie, Brynyn and Brinkley Spires, Alexis and Jake Thompson, Taylor, Joseph, and Alex Springfield, Willow and Zachery Flynn, Antonio, Reuben and Bowen Simmons.
A graveside service to honor Velma's life will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, November, 21, 2022 at Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola, with Rev. Dr. Scott Hohn, officiating.
Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel at 9:15 AM to line up for police procession to the cemetery. 2276 Airport Blvd., Pensacola, FL 32504.
