Virginia Byrd Tompkins, 94, died in Longview, TX, on Friday, April 23, 2010. She was born to Joseph Earl and Annettor Dean Byrd in Birmingham, AL, on July 11, 1915. She was married in Atlanta, GA, on December 3, 1937, to Bruce Elwood Tompkins who preceded her in death in 1998. They lived in Pensacola, FL, from 1937-1997, except for Bruces service in Panama during World War II. Virginia worked at NAS Pensacola for three years during the war. For the remainder of her life she was a homemaker. They had one son who died at birth, and two daughters. In 1997, they moved to Plano, TX, to be near their children. Virginia has lived in Longview, TX, for the past three years. She is a member of The Campus Church in Pensacola. She is survived by her two daughters: LeNoir Foster and her husband, Dave, of Carrollton, TX; and Wynne Young and her husband, Dave, of Avinger, TX. Three grandchildren: Jeff Foster and wife, Jennifer; Brad Young and wife, Crystal; Karen Foster Pierce and husband, Mark. Seven great-grandchildren: Michaela, Caitlyn and Nathaniel Pierce; Joshua, Jacob and Jordan Foster; and Abbygail Young. Survivors also include one sister-in-law, Bessie Allen of Melrose, FL, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Virginia also leaves behind many friends-the old ones are pure gold and the new ones are silver. Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at Pensacola Memorial Gardens.
