Obituary

Wiley Jones West, 88, went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, July 18, 2017. Wiley was born in Sweetwater, AL, the third child, and only son, of Wiley and Maggie West. He attended ninth through eleventh grades at Sweetwater High School, then transferred to Thomasville High School his senior year. He loved sports, and played basketball and football for Thomasville High School. After graduation, he enrolled in Apprentice School at Pensacola Naval Air Station, and began his career as an Aircraft Mechanic. In 1948, Wiley entered the Air Force and faithfully served our country in Germany until 1952 . Wiley then returned to Pensacola Naval Air Station, where he resumed his work as an Aircraft Mechanic, until he retired in 1984.

Wiley loved his Lord and his family. He was an active member of East Hill Baptist Church for over fifty years. He served as a deacon and founded several athletic programs at the church. Wiley began the first women's softball, volleyball and basketball programs at East Hill Baptist Church, so that his girls could participate in sports. His vacation time was spent traveling all over the United States on Church Mission Trips with his family and his church family. In 1987, East Hill Baptist church honored Wiley with an award for Outstanding Christian Athlete in the Basketball League.

Wiley loved his family, and they were his first priority. He always attended recitals, concerts, ballgames and other events that involved his children and grandchildren. Every child and grandchild could count on Wiley being in the audience or the stands to root them on! He always took time to visit or sit with a sick family member in the hospital.

Wiley was a loyal friend, and enjoyed traveling, playing cards and socializing with his wife and other couples from the church. There was always laughter, good food and a good time when he and his wife got together with their friends. Wiley enjoyed camping with his family and friends, and was a member of the EE Camping Club.

Wiley was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Maebelle Manning West; his parents, Wiley and Maggie West and two sisters, Susie Lewis and Evie Lee Calhoun.

Wiley is survived by his three daughters; Shirley W. Godwin (Steve), Melinda Lee Davidson (Mark) and Belinda Sue Kasic, as well as grandchildren, Stephanie Nobles Hudgens (Wes), Devin J. Poe, Leslie Ann Middleton (Broox), Nathan W. Poe, Ryan Davidson (Rachael), April Davidson and Caroline Davidson and one great-grandchild, Kayla Skye Conway.
