Obituary

On the morning of November 23, 2014, William "Bill" Edward McFarland passed away after aggressively fighting cancer for four months. He was surrounded by his family early Sunday morning at Covenant Hospice in West Florida Hospital in Pensacola, FL when he peacefully left us. Bill was 60 years old. He was born in Wilmington, DE on August 17, 1954. He was preceded in death by his parents; Charles and Patricia McFarland along with his three sisters; Sandy, Candy and Penny all of Wilmington, DE. Bill is survived by his three daughters; Kristy Massey-Crews (Chris), Sandy Brock (Jeff) and Tammy McFarland along with the mother of his children; Eileen McFarland all of Pensacola, FL. He is also survived by his five wonderful grandchildren; Luke, Gracie, Phinnigan, Olivia and Sterling also of Pensacola, FL along with his three sisters; Terry, Linda and Maureen and his four brothers; Patrick, Mike, Mickey and Timmy all of Wilmington, DE. Bill was affectionately known by most as "Coach McFarland", "Mr. Mac" or "Tubby". He devoted his life to his daughters, but most importantly to their success in sports. Bill never met a stranger. He touched the lives of so many, because he had the biggest heart. To be a McFarland, one must not only have a full heart, but also have no fear and always put others before themselves. Bill carried his name out to the fullest. His greatest joys were coaching and cooking. He devoted 25 years of his life to coaching basketball at Sacred Heart Cathedral School. He spent much of his life in Pensacola working, as a volunteer and supervisor for the Catholic Youth Sports League. He could always be found by the grill or in the kitchen laughing and cooking the best food, no matter what event he was serving. Bill was always happiest when he was making others happy, because after all, he just wanted everyone to "have fun", as he would always say. Bill was such an inspirational man to many, and could be called "Dad" by many more than just his three daughters. He had encouraging words for all, an infectious smile that could be seen from miles, a contagious laugh and could provide wise cracks for days. He will be remembered as an extraordinary father, grandfather, brother, uncle, coach and friend. All of the successes in his life will be seen through his children, grandchildren and many friends. Bill left us with a lifetime worth of wonderful memories, and for that we are all eternally grateful. While Bill is in heaven watching over all of us, he would want us to still "put some arc on it", "use your legs", "follow thru" and don't stop until the whistle blows. Visitation for Bill will be held 5-7pm Friday, November 28, 2014 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10am Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, Pensacola, FL. A reception to honor Bill will be held immediately after the funeral service at the Garden Center in Pensacola, FL where all are welcome to join his family in celebrating his life.
