Obituary

William "Bill" Howard Griffith of Pensacola Beach, Florida, born to Howard Sydney Griffith and Gladys Pringle Griffith on August 8, 1925 in Altoona, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully on Friday, November 14, 2014. Bill attended Penn State University where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and subsequently attended Northeastern University in Boston where he was awarded his Master's Degree. He met the love of his life, Patricia Carney Griffith, who also attended Penn State University while at Altoona High School and they were married after Bill's return from his service as an aviator in World War II in the U. S. Army Air Corps. He served with the Fifteenth Air Force flying B-24s over Italy and Germany in 1944 -1945. They had one son, Michael John Griffith. The family moved to Pensacola in 1968 when Bill's work with Westinghouse led him to select Pensacola as the home for the new plant where he supervised the construction and management of the facility until his retirement. Prior to moving to Pensacola, the family lived in Sewickley, Pennsylvania and upstate New York. During Bill's years in the service the family traveled extensively and lived in Hawaii, Guam, California, New York and Massachusetts. Bill's expertise as a nuclear engineer included work on the first nuclear Submarine, the Sea Wolf, and international travel to include Japan, France and Belgium to work on nuclear power system development. Bill served his community well in his contributions of service to The Santa Rosa Island Authority as a former chairman and board member for 14 years where he was committed to beach development and preservation. He served on numerous bank boards and engineering firm boards and was a former President of The Florida Chamber of Commerce as well as The Committee of 100. He served as a deacon at The Pensacola Beach Community Church and was an avid supporter of the beach and his church. His business contributions to the community through Westinghouse were many and created job growth and contributed to community prosperity. He was also a member of The First Presbyterian Church in downtown Pensacola. He and his wife Pat traveled extensively after Bill's retirement and enjoyed many happy years on Pensacola Beach. He also enjoyed golf and social events at Pensacola Country Club and was a member of the Pensacola Yacht Club and McGuire's Irish Politicians Club. He is predeceased by his wife, Patricia Carney Griffith and his parents, Howard Sydney Griffith and Gladys Pringle Griffith. He is survived by his son, Michael John Griffith and his wife, Cheryl Young-Griffith, Pensacola; and his granddaughter, Mary Charlene "Charley" Young- Griffith, Manhattan, New York. A celebration of life will be held at Pensacola Beach Community Church, Pensacola Beach, Florida, Friday, November 21, 2014 at 11 a.m. Pastor Charles Randle (Ret) presiding. A reception to honor Bill will follow in The Parrish Hall. A private graveside service will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery for the family. Due to floral regulations at Barrancas, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Pensacola Beach Community Church, 920 Via De Luna Drive, Pensacola Beach, FL 32561, The Humane Society, 5 North Q Street, Pensacola, FL 32502, The American Heart Association or a charity of your choice.
