William Herbert Hulbert, 92, passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2012 in Pensacola, FL. He was born May 21, 1919, in Sault St. Marie, Michigan to William Herbert and Ruth Miller. After the death of both parents by the time he was just 2 years old, he was adopted by his paternal aunt, Pearl Miller Hulbert and her husband, Richard Curtiss Hulbert. In his early years he lived on the shores of the beautiful 3.5 mile Hulbert Lake in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The family retired to Pensacola, returning to their beloved Hulbert Lake for the summers. Herbert graduated from the University of Florida in 1942 with a degree in Business Administration. He was a cheerleader there for 3 yrs and continued to be an avid Gator fan. His family lovingly called him "Papa Gator". Following graduation he married the love of his life, Janice Hield from Vero Beach, FL in 1942. They were about to celebrate their 70th anniversary. After serving his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II and the Korean Conflict, Herbert worked at Ed White's Men's Clothiers and then became a Chartered Life Underwriter for New England Mutual Life Insurance Company in the office of Box, Hulbert and Rein. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church, Pensacola, serving in many areas such as chairman of the Administrative Board, leader in the Lipscomb Sunday School Class, and "father" of the 4 year old Sunday school class. He also served for years as bookkeeper of United Ministries and in other ways in community ministries for the cause of peace and justice. He loved and took great pride in gardening and the appearance of his yard, and loved boating and fishing with his family and friends. Herbert is survived by his wife Jan, of 69 years; children, Rick (Pam) Hulbert, Pam (Bill) Dannelly and Alan (Sue Sumner) Hulbert; grandchildren, Sara Jan Hulbert, Chris (Kathy) Dannelly, Curt (Tracie) Hulbert, Jeff (Jennifer) Dannelly, Rodger Hulbert and Nick Hulbert; great grandchildren, Elizabeth Ashley Farrow, Bella Hulbert, Grayson Dannelly, Harper Dannelly, William Dannelly and Emerson Dannelly; sister-in-law, Florence Royall; as well as nieces and nephews. A Service of Celebration of Herbert's life will be Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 10:00 AM at First United Methodist Church, Pensacola, followed by a reception in the Wright Place. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Living Trust of First United Methodist Church, Pensacola, 6 E. Wright St., 32501, United Ministries of Pensacola, P. O. Box 9255, 32513 or the charity of your choice. The family would also like to thank all the caregivers from Medi Home Care, Emerald Coast Hospice and Bayside Manor for their compassionate care of our husband/father.
