Obituary

William L. Barrineau, Jr. passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at the age of 81. A Pensacola native, Bill was born February 28, 1932 to William and Bessie Barrineau. After graduating from Pensacola High School in 1949, he attended Emory University. His college life at Emory was interrupted by four years of naval service aboard the destroyer, USS Bradford during the Korean Conflict. Once his naval service was completed, Bill returned to Emory, where he continued his degree in Business and became Consul of Sigma Chi Fraternity. It was also where he met his future wife, the former Joy Youmans. Bill and Joy were married in 1957 and returned to Pensacola where he began his financial career at Merrill Lynch. During his 42 year career, he saw the industry evolve from a chalkboard and a Trans-Lux ticker to a computer. He retired in 1999 as a Vice President. Bill's achievements at Merrill Lynch include The Circle of Excellance; Charles E. Merrill Circle; Chairman's Club; President's Club and The Quarter Century Club. He was very proud of his hometown and served in numerous capacities from PTA president to Chairman of the Downtown Improvement Board where he was instrumental in the revitalization of Palafox Street in the 1980s. He was a member of the Navy League; the Pensacola Sports Association; The Pensacola Country Club and The Fiesta of Five Flags, having been a Knight in the Fiesta Court in 1971. As an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Pensacola for over 50 years, he served on numerous committees including the Administrative Board where he served as Chairman. He helped the church expand downtown and played a key role in the establishment of the Wesley Haven Villa Methodist Home in Pensacola. He held positions on the Alabama-West Florida Methodist Foundation and Birmingham Southern College's Board of Trustees. He enjoyed boating and fishing, but out of all his interests, his favorite was spending time with his family. Bill is survived by his wife, Joy Barrineau; four children, Lee Barrineau of Atlanta, GA, Bob Barrineau of Decatur, GA, David Barrineau of Brooklyn, NY and Julie Krehely and husband Donald of Pensacola, FL; six grandchildren, Mac, Myles, Jake, Hope, Will and Libby; sister, Barbara Schreiner of Omaha, NE as well as nieces, nephews and countless friends. The family would like to thank Bill's caregivers for their compassion, assistance and friendship. A private, family memorial service will be held in his honor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church of Pensacola, 6 E. Wright St., Pensacola, FL 32501.
