Obituary

William Joseph Noonan, Jr., age 88, passed away peacefully at his home in the early evening of Wednesday, August 18, 2010. Mr. Noonan was born August 31, 1921 to William Joseph Noonan and Jane Chilcote Noonan in South Bend, Indiana. The family moved to Pensacola in 1923. Lasting friendships were made in the North Hill neighborhood where he lived. In 1939 he graduated from Pensacola High School and entered Washington and Lee University in Virginia, where he was president of the student body and captain of the golf team. After graduation in 1943, he joined the Navy and became an aviator and flight instructor in World War II. He received his Wings of Gold in 1945 at NAS Pensacola. Mr. Noonan joined his father's heavy construction and road building company, Noonan Construction Company, in 1946 and later became President. Noonan Construction Company completed many interstate, municipal, and military contracts throughout the Southeastern United States. In 1975, he served as President of American Concrete Paving Association. He was also a founder and co-owner of Concrete Supply Company and Southern Prestressed Concrete Company. Mr. Noonan has been a long time active member and pillar of First Presbyterian Church where he taught Sunday School continuously for 51 years, served as an elder and board member of various committees. He also participated in 14 annual summer mission trips. Bill Noonan loved the city of Pensacola! He served his community as a board member of numerous boards in Pensacola including Baptist Hospital, West Florida Bank, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Pensacola Historical Society, City Recreation Board, Baptist Health Care Foundation, Pensacola Retirement Village, Interfaith Jail Ministries, Gulf Coast Economic Club, World War II Memorial Monument Committee, Pensacola Junior College Trustee, and Salvation Army Capitol Campaign Fund Co-chairman. He also served on the board of Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. He was active in local carnival activities and served as Don Tristan DeLuna XIX during 1968 Fiesta of Five Flags celebration. Bill Noonan never met a stranger and was a cheerleader for positive living! He enjoyed grandfather activities, traveling, boating, fishing and sports, especially golf! During the 1940's through the 1970's, he was one of the top championship golfers in the area, winning tournaments at Pensacola Country Club, Osceola Municipal, Scenic Hills Country Club, and A. C. Reed Navy. In 2002, Bill Noonan was inducted into Pensacola Sports Association Hall of Fame. Recently, the new club house at Osceola Municipal was named for him to honor his athleticism and many years of service on the City of Pensacola Recreation Board. Survivors include his devoted wife of 65 years Margaret Loving, four children, William Joseph Noonan, III of Pensacola, Margaret Crabtree (Bob) of Jefferson City, TN, Frances Crist (Rob) of Pensacola, Jane Akin (Mark) of Carbondale, IL, sixteen grandchildren and twenty one great grandchildren and one sister, Jane Noonan Pace and her husband Dick Pace. Mr. Noonan's last years were blessed with the loving care of three special friends and caregivers, Alconric Peavy, Cherry Savage and Sharon Boykens. A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00pm Sunday, August 22, 2010 at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Randon Jackson and Rev. Frank Beall officiating, a reception will follow the service.
