IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William "Bill"
P. Delavan
October 23, 1940 – December 21, 2023
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William Patrick Delavan, who departed this world on December 21, 2023, after bravely facing declining health for several years. Bill, as he was affectionately known, leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, and a life well-lived.
Born on October 23, 1940, in St. Paul, Minnesota, Bill spent his formative years in Los Angeles, California. A proud graduate of Loyola High School, he furthered his education at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. His adventurous spirit led him to join the Navy as a Naval Aviation Cadet (NAVCAD), earning his Wings of Gold as a Naval Aviator. Bill's commitment to service extended beyond the military, as he embarked on a 25-year career as an airline pilot with Pan American World Airways, followed by nine years with United Airlines. He retired in 2001.
Bill's devotion to community service was exemplified through his 50-year commitment to Rotary International. He was honored with the Rotarian of the Year in 2019 and was recognized multiple times as a Paul Harris Fellow, reflecting his tireless efforts to make a positive impact in the lives of others.
A pillar of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, Bill's contributions to the church extended beyond mere attendance, as he actively participated in shaping its future through various leadership roles, including Vestry Senior Warden. His leadership was humbly driven by his deep-rooted faith and commitment to God and his community.
In addition to his professional and community achievements, Bill was a fervent advocate for physical fitness. Whether at home, or traveling he made it a priority to make it to the gym. He truly embraced the importance of a healthy lifestyle and he liked to inspire those around him to embrace wellness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Stella Delavan, sister Stella Delavan Kennedy, and brother Phil Delavan.
Bill is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Ann Ellington Delavan, who stood by his side through thick and thin, creating a lifetime of cherished memories together; sister Mary Moore of Arroyo Grande CA; loving daughters Amy Delavan Egeli (Stuart); Jennifer Delavan Engel (Doug); and Nancy Delavan Clay (Chad). His legacy lives on through his grandchildren Allison Egeli, Tyler Egeli, Madelyn Engel, Sydney Engel, Kyle Engel, Will Clay, and Jack Clay who all lovingly referred to their grandfather as "Papa."
Bill Delavan will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments but also for the warmth of his smile, the strength of his character, and the kindness he extended to all who were fortunate enough to know him. He leaves behind a community enriched by his presence and a legacy that will endure in the hearts and minds of those who were touched by his remarkable life.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00am Saturday, January 6, 2024, at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church. Burial of the ashes will follow in the Memorial Garden and a reception afterwards in the Henry Baggett Parish Hall at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers in honor of his enduring spirit of service and compassion, the family requests that donations be made to Gulf Breeze Rotary Scholarship Foundation, Inc. P.O. Box 808 Gulf Breeze, FL 32562 or St Christopher's Episcopal Church.
