William "Bill" Eugene Scanlan, 89, of Pensacola, Florida, formerly of Wynne, Arkansas, passed away October 3, 2018.
Bill was born October 4, 1929 in Laurens, Iowa, son of the late John Justin and Pauline McDermott Scanlan. He married Betty Jean Weindel in 1950, who survives of the home, together they raised nine children. The Scanlan family were members of St. Peter Catholic Church where Bill was active in the Knights of Columbus, serving once as Grand Knight. He was also a Boy Scout leader and a Little League coach. Bill worked for Yale and Towne in Forrest City for 10 years while living in Wynne. While serving in the Navy Reserves the USS Pueblo was captured by the North Koreans in 1968 and Bill's unit was called to active duty. The family moved to Jacksonville, Florida and finished a long career as a Navy family. Chief Petty Officer Scanlan served on the USS Shangri-la in Vietnam as well as many other duty stations.
He is survived by his wife and children, Sandra Green (Steve), Dennis (Susie), Cindy Patton (Ronnie), Bill, Pam Glazer (Tom), Tamara Bourne (Andrew), Scott (Belinda), Brian, and Doug (Lisa), 24 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and his brother Bob of Ankeny, Iowa.
Visitation will begin at 11:00am until the Rosary begins at 12:00pm, followed immediately by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:15pm on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at St. Paul Catholic Church, 3131 Hyde Park Road, Pensacola, FL 32503. Interment will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery, Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida.
