Obituary

Wilma Jean McKinney, 67, of Pensacola, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 surrounded by her loving family. Born October 12, 1947 in Kenova, WV, Wilma was the only daughter of Shirley and Forest McKinney and much-loved sister to Oliver and Gregg. The McKinney's, a Navy family, moved often, so Wilma and her siblings attended multiple schools. A three year posting to Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands gave Wilma a life-long love for the ocean and the beach. Returning to the states, Wilma graduated from Cabrillo High School in Pt. Magoo, CA in 1965. A son, Dan, was born in Oxnard, CA in 1966, and son, Eric and daughter, Chandra soon after in Reno, NV. Wilma served honorably in the Army Reserves and spent part of her enlistment in Germany. She returned to the States and moved for a time to Pensacola before relocating to Arizona. A longtime resident of Seligman, AZ, Wilma was known throughout her community as a good neighbor, a devoted gardener, rock hound and friend. In true pioneer spirit, she built her own house and lived with her many animals in a self sufficient life-style totally "off the grid". Wilma returned to Pensacola in 2010, and on June 23rd that year, she married Joe Kanarkiewicz. The couple purchased a house which they enjoyed remodeling. Wilma was preceded in death by her father, LCDR (ret.) Forest O. McKinney and a son, Daniel Brigham. She is survived by her husband, Joseph W. Kanarkiewicz of Pensacola; mother, Shirley (Legg) of Pensacola; her daughter, Chandra and husband DeWayne; son, Eric and wife Niema; grandchildren, Jake, Kyle and Logan; her brothers, Oliver and wife Ann, Gregg and wife Mary; nephew, Matt and wife Pam; many cousins, including Lisa Peck of Pensacola and dearest friend, DeeDee Severdia. Visitation will be at 10:30am Tuesday, April 28, 2015 with Funeral services beginning at 11:30am from Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, Rev. Laura Wendt will officiate. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery at 12:30pm. Pallbearers will be Oliver McKinney, Gregg McKinney, Matt McKinney and Joseph Kanarkiewicz. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee https://www.elephants.com or World Wildlife Fund, Inc., Adopt and Elephant. Special thanks are given to Covenant Hospice Inpatient and Palliative Care Center at West Florida Hospital.
