Dr. Woodrow W. (Sonny) Cushing, 69, of Pace passed away on June 10, 2013 at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola. He was a 1961 graduate of Pensacola High School. He held BA, MBA, and MAcc degrees from the University of West Florida and a PhD in finance from Florida Atlantic University. Dr. Cushing worked in the banking industry for 23 years, first as a teller at Central Bank in Lexington, KY and eventually attaining the position of Area President of First Florida Bank in Pensacola, where he worked from 1980 to 1989. He later served on the faculties of the University of Minnesota-Duluth and the University of West Florida as a professor of finance before retiring in 2007. Dr. Cushing was an amateur pilot and was active in numerous civic organizations and charities, including the American Cancer Society of Escambia County, the Pensacola Museum of Art, the United Way of Escambia County, and the Pace and Gulf Breeze Rotary Clubs. He was preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow W. Cushing, Sr. and Vonceil Holt Cushing of Cantonment. He is survived by Connie Lewis Cushing, his wife of 48 years; two sons, Christopher and Brian Cushing; two grandchildren, Christian and Caroline Cushing and a brother, Gary Cushing. A Memorial service will be held from 11:00am to 12:00pm on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel in Pensacola. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the Santa Rosa Kids' House.
