IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Wylie Barrow
Hogeman
March 20, 1931 – May 5, 2023
Wylie Barrow Hogeman, age 92 of Pensacola, Florida, died peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, May 5, 2023. He grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the son of Mary Louis West and Hubert Henry Hogeman. Wylie was one of four sons and was preceded in death by his brother Gene Carroll Hogeman. He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Lola Fenn Hogeman, and brothers Hubert and Fred Hogeman; by his children, Mary Laura Stagno (Sergio), and Lola Belle Ellis; by his grandchildren, Blanton and Laura Stagno and Anna and Tucker Ellis.
Wylie excelled as a chemical engineer with multiple degrees from Louisiana State University, where he also played college basketball and baseball. Between degrees he served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Combat Engineers, distinguishing himself in Germany after being pulled off the front line by the Commanding General to recruit and coach what would become a division winning army basketball team.
Wylie's career began at Dupont Chemicals in Texas. And in short time, he was recruited by the Chemstrand Corporation to their plant in Pensacola, Florida, when Chemstrand, a division of the Monsanto Corporation, was then the largest manufacturer of synthetic fiber. While there, Wylie held a patent in the manufacturing of specific acids required to produce nylon. From plant management he moved into Monsanto's corporate management, after completing executive training at MIT. Wylie went on to serve Monsanto for thirty plus years as head of its international rubber chemicals business and later as the President and CEO of its Research Corporation.
His retirement years were spent in his beloved Pensacola where he and Lola began their life together and where their daughters were born. He especially enjoyed spending time at his beach house. In his later years, his loves were family, friends, his pets, Christ Church, the LSU Tigers, and the long walks he took in his neighborhood.
A memorial service will be held on May 11, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, Pensacola, Florida, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Episcopal Church.
