Obituary

Betty Jo Hammond Cornwall, of Pensacola, Florida died in her home, surrounded by her family on Thursday, September 8, 2022. She was 96 years old.

Betty is survived by her children, Carol Cornwall, Emily Cornwall, and Elizabeth Cornwall Doenlen (Henry A Doenlen, III) all of Pensacola, FL; as well as two grandsons, Christopher Doenlen and William Doenlen of CA and NY.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Cornwall; her parents, Dorothy and Robert Hammond; her sisters, Virginia Adams and Jonne Mercer.

Born on August 17, 1926, in Hazard, Kentucky she was an accomplished student, graduating from Shawnee High School in 1944 second in a class of 130 women and received an award of highest character, the American Legion Award. Her business skills brought her jobs working for the Mayor of Louisville, and the DuPont Company after marriage.

A lyric soprano, she met her husband through her soon to be father-in-law, William Cornwall as they performed together in the choir at Beechmont Methodist Church. She was passionate with her hobbies that included reading, antiques, sewing, bridge, and gardening.  She even became a master gardener at the age of 80. A lifelong student of learning, Betty completed her B.A in English literature at the University of Delaware.

By retirement, Betty was fortunate to have travelled most parts of the world with her husband - twenty-seven countries spanning six continents. They had a keen interest in experiencing and educating themselves on different cultures.

Betty passed away peacefully in her home after a lengthy illness. Remembered as kind and considerate to all that knew her, she was easy going, goal oriented, an excellent writer and an active participant in her church and community.

A memorial service will be held 1:00pm Friday, September 23, 2022, at Christ Episcopal Church in Pensacola.

A graveside service will be held 11:00am Saturday, September 17, 2022, at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, KY. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Betty's life.

In lieu of flowers remembrances can be sent to the Alzheimer's Association.
