IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert E.
Bondurant, M.D.
April 2, 1940 – June 10, 2024
Robert Eugene Bondurant, M.D., 84, died on Monday, June 10, 2024, after a protracted illness.
He was born on April 2, 1940, in Highpoint, NC, son of Everett Harry Bondurant, Sr. and Rose Marie Bondurant. Bob graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, FL and attended Jacksonville University where he earned a BS degree in chemistry in 1962. He was awarded a National Foundation Health Scholarship from the March of Dimes to attend medical school at the University of Florida where he earned his degree in 1966. He was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Charlotte Memorial Hospital in North Carolina. He subsequently earned designations as a board-certified diplomate in both Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Diseases. He spent six years in the US Navy as a medical officer, stationed in Brunswick, GA, San Diego, CA, & Alameda, CA where he obtained the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After the Navy, Dr. Bondurant moved his family to Gulf Breeze, FL and established a private medical practice in Pensacola in 1973.
Dr. Bondurant was well known as a gifted diagnostician with a commitment to life-long learning that he also instilled in his children. He was a man of integrity, compassion, and selfless to the core. He worked closely with the local hospitals, advocating tirelessly for the construction of Gulf Breeze Hospital. He served on numerous medical committees and spent time volunteering on the State of Florida's Advisory Committee for Respiratory Therapy as well as teaching at Pensacola State College's Respiratory Care program, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Pensacola Naval Hospital to name a few. He was a humble man and would be embarrassed by any accolades or references to the many awards that were provided to him. He spent countless hours at the local hospitals caring for his patients, never too busy to stop and listen to, or assist, anyone in need of care. During his 53-year career as a physician, he made a difference in the lives of thousands of patients and their families.
Aside from medicine, Robert had many talents and interests. He was a catcher, and captain of his baseball team in high school and earned his pilot's license while he was a medical student and resident. He loved fishing, camping, and hunting, spending many hours with his children pursuing marlin and tuna offshore in the Gulf of Mexico and white-tailed deer and turkey in the flatwoods of South Alabama.
All that knew him respected his skills as a physician, but it was his caring nature and willingness to listen that meant the most to those that knew and loved him. No words can express how much he will be missed.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Beverly Jane Bondurant and his two brothers, Everett Harry Bondurant, Jr of Jacksonville, FL and Glenn Mercer Bondurant of Dahlonega, GA. He leaves his four children, Robert Christopher Bondurant (Deborah) of Fairhope, AL, John Howard Bondurant (Carla) of Pensacola, William Michael Bondurant, and Mary Katherine Bondurant, both of Gulf Breeze, FL; as well as seven beautiful grandchildren.
A Memorial Service to honor Bob and his beloved wife Beverly will be held at 4:00pm July 15, 2024, at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, 2276 Airport Blvd., Pensacola, FL 32504.
